Job Description
The Fitter - 1A will be responsible for performing structural fitting functions to fabricate structural steel according to customer specifications and direction from the foreman or supervisor. This role requires the ability to work safely, communicate effectively, and take directions from superiors.
Responsibilities
- Perform structural fitter assignments as assigned.
- Work safely and maintain a safe working environment.
- Notify the foreman or supervisor of any safety and/or structural issues as warranted.
- Lay out, position, align, and fit together fabricated structural steel plate according to customer specifications and direction from foreman/supervisor.
- Move parts into position, manually, by hoist or crane, and align parts, using jacks, etc.
- Remove high spots and cut bevels, using hand files, portable grinders, and/or cutting torch, as well as give directions to the welder to build up low spots or short pieces.
- Tack weld, if necessary.
- Consult with foreman or supervisor regarding installation or repair problems, sequence of operations, and time required to complete repair and/or installation.
- Attend safety meetings as required.
- Maintain a safe working environment.
- Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Minimum one year experience as a structural fitter (shipyard experience preferred, but not required).
- Ability to perform simple paperwork as required for filling out forms and logs.
- Good judgment skills and a high level of work initiative.
- Ability to work independently without direct supervision.
- Ability to meet strict attendance requirements.
Physical/Environmental Requirements
- Barge chemical environment.
- Requires prolonged kneeling, standing, walking, twisting, climbing, and the ability to lift and carry in excess of 120 lbs, assisted.
- Ability to work in varied conditions (i.e.: heat, cold, rain, ice, snow, etc.), inside and outside.
- Able to work in confined spaces, heights, and operate equipment efficiently and safely.
